A savings and loan office in Butler, PA, is heated by a passive Trombe wall. The wall is 300 mm thick with a total area of 58 m/sup 2/ covered with white water crystal glazing. A black shale floor absorbs and stores heat collected through skylights covered with insulating shutters which are opened and closed by a freon gas system. A wood burning fireplace is used for backup heating and heats water which is circulated to a 1,700 liter storage tank connected to a heat exchanger. A small gas hot water heater provides additional backup. Berming covers 50% of the north wall and 25% of the east and west walls. The building cost about $970/m/sup 2/ to construct. Information on the design firm is provided.
