Preheating water in greenhouses

The incorporation of domestic water preheating units into an attached solar greenhouse is described. Used, glass-lined water heating tanks were stripped of the outer jackets, insulated, and painted flat black. The tanks were enclosed in breadbox type water heater units with reflective insulated shutters and were mounted at the peak of the attached greenhouse. Placement of the water heaters in the peak productively uses this unused space, reduces heat loses from this area, and provides a protective overhang for summer shading. The system operates manually on demand and drains down to prevent freezing.
