This paper describes S-diode current-pulse generators for modulation of Gunn diodes or semiconductor lasers. The generators provide quasirectangular video pulses of any polarity with durations of 1-20 nsec, rise and fall times of about 0.5 nsec, and amplitudes of 40-60 V into a 50-..cap omega.. load. Diagrams show a modulator that uses a step-up transformer to provide the S-diode breakdown voltage, and a modulator with a low-voltage supply in which the S-diode breakdown voltage is provided by an inductive buffer storage device. The AA732A(B) gallium arsenide microwave switching diodes described are promising devices for producing powerful pulses.
