Simple solutions: energy efficiency. [Solar retrofit for a Michigan office and warehouse]

A project is described in which a site-manufactured solar air collector was retrofitted to an existing office and warehouse building in Michigan. The retrofit provides space and domestic water heating, and is designed to provide about 72% of the office annual heating load and about 62% of the warehouse load. Design problems include large heat losses through the large warehouse doors, absence of a suitable tilted roof surface with adequate structural strength for collector mounting, and lack of a good heat storage location in the building. Proposed design solutions and construction details are described. The solar heating system, collector design, and system performance are described. (LEW)
