Sun Oil's new slant to drilling

Journal Article · · Drilling; (United States)
OSTI ID:5625438
Being constructed for the DX Division of Sun Oil Co., a tilted rig will drill a series of slanted wells into shallow producing formations from on top of a 3,000-ton platform that will be anchored off the coast of California. As many as 60 wells will be drilled from Platform Hillhouse and will tap many producing zones in this oil field, now being developed after it was opened for leasing by the federal government. Deeper zones will be reached by a standard drilling rig boring straight down for several hundred feet, then curving the holes in a planned pattern by conventional methods. Newest of all offshore platforms, Hillhouse will stand in 190 ft of water. The platform will measure 140 ft long, 105 ft wide, and have 2 decks, the upper for the drilling rigs and the lower for the producing equipment. Elaborate precautions are being taken to prevent pollution of ocean waters. It is scheduled to be erected in May. Drilling is scheduled to start in July.
