Slant-hole drilling provides key to Morecambe field development

Journal Article · · Pet. Eng. Int.; (United States)

British Gas Corp.'s plans for its Morecambe field development include 8 permanent offshore structures and a jackup drilling rig to support a unique slant-hole drilling program. At peak rates, the field will produce 1200 MMCFD in the mid-1980s, after a phase development program. First gas should move to shore by the winter of 1983-1984. The combination of shallow water at the field's location - 100 to 120 ft - and the shallow reservoir - 3000 ft below the seabed - contribute to some unusual development problems and some unique solutions. Slant-hole drilling is used to extend the reach from each platform and thus cut the number of platforms needed by one-third.
