USDI's Outer Continental Shelf lease sale in the Beaufort Sea contested

Recent court decisions involving offshore leases in the Beaufort Sea indicate a concern for protecting natural resources, preventing damage to the environment, and preserving the interests of native Alaskans. A comprehensive environmental policy blending local, state, and federal demands exist in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the Endangered Species Act (ESA). These laws must be enforced despite pressures for compliance with legislation to develop offshore energy resources. 98 references. (DCK)
