Coal-ash corrosion in superheaters and reheaters

Coal-ash corrosion is one of the major hurdles to be overcome if the improved coal-fired power plant is to succeed. This paper describes the major variables affecting coal-ash corrosion and provides laboratory corrosion data generated with various levels of SO/sub 2/ and alkali sulfates. The corrosion rate increases as SO/sub 2/ and alkali-sulfate concentration increase. As previously observed, the corrosion rate experiences a bell-shaped curve with respect to temperature (i.e., increases with rising temperature to a maximum and then decreases). The work that is the subject of this paper showed that the bell-shaped curve shifts to a higher temperature than previously reported and varies with different alloys. The valuable isocorrosion curve was developed to provide a mass of predicting the corrosion rate for various SO/sub 2/, alkali-sulfate, and temperature combinations.
