Commercial and industrial customers of Portland General Electric (PGE) may have their power curtailed unless the Northwest Power Pool can make up the power lost from the continued shutdown of the utility's Trojan Nuclear Plant and the lack of rain for its hydroelectric plants. The Trojan plant was shut down for repairs in mid-October, but the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has delayed its reopening pending more information and modifications to the plant. Because of the serious power shortage, PGE was allowed to operate a combustion turbine for 120 days to make up some of the deficit. Voluntary curtailments were requested in December, but a regional three percent curtailment may be mandated. The Northwest Power Pool is exploring ways to help PGE that will address the underlying problems of inflation and regulation. (DCK)
