Biomass heat exchanger furnace

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5618338

This patent describes a heat exchanger furnace. This furnace consists of a first upright cylindrical housing; a second upright cylindrical housing disposed within the first housing and defining a combustion chamber having an inlet for fuel and an outlet for combustion gases generated within the combustion chambers. A plenum chamber is formed between the first and second housings and has a top and a bottom. A first manifold has plural and is disposed adjacent to the top of the plenum chamber and the second housing and having a first compartment thereof communicating with the outlet. A second manifold has compartments and disposed adjacent the bottom of the plenum chamber and the second housing. An inlet is formed in the first housing and communicating with the plenum chamber for admitting a gaseous fluid. An outlet formed in the first housing and communicating with the plenum chamber and spaced substantially from the inlet for the gaseous fluid. There are for circulating the gaseous fluid through the plenum chamber; and means for defining at least four sets of passageways for the combustion gases disposed within the plenum chamber and interconnecting corresponding compartments within the first and second manifolds for four successive passages of the combustion gases these passages are between the manifolds through the plenum chamber. The combustion gases flow successively between the corresponding compartments of the first and second manifolds and are in heat exchange relation with the gaseous fluid circulating through the plenum chamber. Vents are formed in the first housing and are in communication with the passageways. The combustion gases are discharged from the furnace subsequent to having successively flowed through the corresponding compartments of the manifolds and the passageways. An apparatus for causes the combustion gases to flow through the manifolds, conduits and vent means.
