Surface studies of WO/sub 3//Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and Ni/W/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5615236

In the present study x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, laser Raman spectroscopy and ion scattering spectroscopy were used to investigate the surface structure of supported tungsten catalysts for hydrodesulfurization of sulfur containing petroleum fractions. The properties of WO/sub 3//Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts were examined as a function of metal loading, calcination temperature and reduction time. The addition of nickel was also studied to determine its effect on the tungsten species present on the catalyst surface. This study has provided a comprehensive picture of the nature of the tungsten species present in WO/sub 3//Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and Ni/W/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts. It has been shown that WO/sub 3//Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and MoO/sub 3//Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts are very similar structurally. Preliminary results for Ni/W/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts have shown that the promoting action of Ni is different than that of Co in Co/Mo/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts. 31 references, 6 figures, 3 tables.
