Annotated bibliography: social and economic factors associated with electric power generating stations

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5606308
This selective bibliography on socioeconomic impacts of electric generating facilities contains studies and impact assessment techniques developed by the electric power industry and their consultants. The majority of entries included were extracted from environmental reports prepared by utilities in connection with licensing applications submitted to regulatory agencies. Entries are organized according to benefits and costs of steam-electric power generation. Benefits from an electric generating station include the direct benefits of electricity generation and revenues derived from sales; and indirect benefits of increased tax revenues to the federal and local taxing units; increased employment level due to the construction and operation of the power plant; increased regional income from sales and services to accommodate the increase in population; and enhancement of environment as a byproduct of environmental and land use planning. Associated costs include the internal construction costs, costs of power plant systems, and related licensing and insurance costs; and external costs such as increased demands for housing and public facilities and services; and effects of population increases. Socioeconomic models and public attitude surveys developed and conducted by the utilities and their consultants are included in Chapter 1 as well as studies of overall socioeconomic impacts of specific plants. Separate chapters are devoted to benefit summaries and cost-benefit analyses on a per plant basis.
