The marine industry's short-term solutions to coal-handling problems are considered. New York's potential for coal export, a bill to authorize channel-dredging to accommodate large colliers, and the reasons to upgrade mines, inland transportation and ports to meet growing world coal demand are discussed. Inland coal handling facilities such as the high-speed rail-to-barge coal transfer terminal on the Mississippi River at Cora, Illinois, facilities on the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the Port of Quebec are discussed, as well as the Public Bulk Terminal at New Orleans and a facility in Baltimore. Information on self-contained portable terminals, i.e., loader-unloaders mounted on ships, is given along with the types of ships and barges used for transportation.
