Conoco's Environmental Conservation Manager discusses the hazardous materials generated in the company's US petroleum operations and the policies and programs for dealing with them. The volume of hazardous wastes is about 5000 tons a year, with about 60% coming from refining operations. Company policy is to minimize the generation of hazardous wastes, then to reclaim, recycle, or destroy as much as possible. Proper safeguards and secure disposal facilities will deal with the remainder. He describes the implementation of these policies, including company review of facilities and the company's objections to the Superfund.
