What are we going to do with lead?

Journal Article · · Battery Man

It is said that in the entire world, 3.5 million tons of lead are mined and 5.3 million tons of refined lead are produced each year. In the US, there were 1,471,149 tons consumed in 1994 with about 80% of it coming from recycling scrap lead. The majority of that scrap comes from spent lead-acid batteries which in most countries has reached a recovery rate of over 90%. Only Sweden reports that they have reached a rate of 100%. This paper discusses the use of lead in the battery industry, occupational and environmental hazards, as well as waste management issues.
