Separation of 210-Bi and 210-Po by using ion-exchange membrane filters: Environmental applications

Conference ·
OSTI ID:560316
Ion-exchange membrane filters have been examined as a simple and inexpensive method for the simultaneous isolation and counting of 210Bi and 210Po in environmental samples. The procedure enables the determination of 210Pb in soils, waters, and aerosol samples through low level beta counting of the 210Bi. Concurrent measurement of the 210Po by alpha counting allows the 210Po/210Pb disequilibria to be determined and used for age determinations. Data comparing this method to more conventional methods will be presented, along with some examples of applications in atmospheric science. The advantages and limitations of this method over the current separation and counting of the naturally occuring radon daughters will be discussed.
