Large [ital p][sub [ital T]] production of direct photons and [pi][sup 0] mesons at 500 GeV/c

We report results from Fermilab experiment E706 on the production of direct photons and neutral mesons at large transverse momenta. The data are for 500 GeV/c[pi][sup [minus]] and p beams incident on Be and Cu targets. Cross sections for [pi][sup 0] and direct-photon production over the kinematic range 3.5[lt][ital p][sub [ital T]][lt]10 GeV/c and [minus]0.7[lt][ital y][lt]0.7 are compared with next-to-leading log QCD calculations using several recent sets of parton distribution functions.
