A hearing on the environmental impacts of acid rain on coastal waters brought testimony from representatives of EDF, NAPAP, US NOAA, government officials and environmental groups. Attention is focused on a report released by the EDF in April, 1988 on the impact of acid rain on estuaries and coastal waters. In addition the Committee intends to review NOAA's National Marine Sanctuaries Program. The program was enacted in 1972 in response to concerns about the increasing degradation of our marine environment. The program provides for the protection of important marine areas through the establishment of marine sanctuaries. To date, seven sanctuaries have been established around the nation.
