Estuaries, geophysics, and the environment

There is a wide range of scientific and engineering interest in estuaries as evidenced, for example, by the publication of numerous reports and conferences. The papers in this volume deal with many aspects of estuarine science, with emphasis on the role of geophysics. They do not treat such aspects as marine food harvests or navigational dredging but deal with phenomena basic to these and other applications. Their scope includes not only geophysical processes, including hydrodynamical and geological processes, but also basic chemical and biological phenomena, especially those related to water quality. The last six papers in this volume extend the discussion into the areas of the chemistry and biology of the estuarine circulation and of the physically suspended particulate matter. They deal with naturally occurring constituents of the waters, as well as those produced by human activities, and their interactions and changes. Research involves measuring the various incoming constituents; tracing their chemical, biological, or physical changes until they reach the sea; and finally establishing what are called biogeochemical models of the estuary to permit prediction of the effect of changes.
