Metals in estuaries

Conference ·
OSTI ID:7263599
A review of data on metal pollution in estuarine systems showed that metals appear to undergo reactions in estuaries. Whether these reactions are toward increased or lessened solubility may depend upon the specific metal and estuary. Seasonal variations are possible. Changes in physical form can be expected to affect the transport routes and rates of metals in the coastal zone and their persistence in estuaries. Changes in both physical and chemical form influence the biological significance of metals because toxicity and assimilation efficiency both depend heavily upon chemical form.
