Cogeneration unit to assist heavy oil recovery

GWF Power Systems Co. has started up a California cogeneration plant designed as a prototype for oil firms who need economic sources of steam and electric power without having to invest in nonoil operations. That could prove to be a boon for oil producers, especially independents, with marginal heavy oil reserves amenable to steaming who have avoided thermal enhanced oil recovery because of the huge capital and operating investment in steam generators or concerns over environmental permitting. In the case of a unit of Tosco Corp., the GWF plant made the difference on a small heavy oil project's economics, enabling it ultimately to boost oil production 10-fold. GWF built the 7,500-kw cogeneration plant to provide 50,000 lb/hr of steam for a heavy oil recovery project operated by Tosco Enhanced Oil Recovery Corp. in Placerita Canyon oil field. Installed cost of the plant is ca $10 million.
