The diffusion-chamber technique has been used to measure the total cross section for the reaction {sup 12}C({gamma},{ital pt})2{alpha}, the energy correlations, and the distributions in the average energy of the particles. Distributions are obtained in the effective mass of the reaction products. A possible mechanism of photodisintegration of carbon into a proton, tritium, and two {alpha} particles in the intermediate-energy region is analyzed. The results of the present experiment show that at high {gamma}-ray energies the main mechanism of the reaction is direct interaction with {ital S} nucleons of the carbon nucleus.
