Offshore flare design to save weight

Journal Article · · Energy Prog.; (United States)

The inherent weight and space limitations associated with offshore platforms necessitate consideration of both process and mechanical aspects in the design of the flare system. Establishment of flare system capacity and layout during the early stages of the platform conceptual design work is needed to minimize costs and avoid late design changes. There are three basic alternatives available to support the flare tip: vertical tower flare on platforms or drilling derrick, extended angled boom on platform, and remote flare independently supported. The mechanical design of a flare system that can save space, weight, and overall platform cost is presented.
