Electron-beam-excited Penning-removal plasma laser lambda = 585. 3 nm on dense neon-containing mixtures

Journal Article · · J. Opt. Soc. Am. B: Opt. Phys.; (United States)
Laser action is obtained on the 3p-italic'(1/2)0--3s-italic'(1/2)/sup 0//sub 1/ transition in Ne of lambda = 585.3 nm by pumping dense Ne--H/sub 2/ and Ne--He--Ar mixtures (P-italic = 0.2-3 atm) with an electron beam ( j-italic/sub max/ = 40 A/cm/sup 2/, tau/sub beam/ = 80 nsec). Inversion occurs because of the removal of the lower active state by the Penning reactions of Ne with H/sub 2/ and Ar. The total output energy is about 2 mJ; the output energy density is about 10/sup -5/ J/cm/sup 3/ for 0.1% lasing efficiency estimated from the calculated energy input.
