Fuel demand for transportation in less-developed countries

Journal Article · · Quarterly Energy Review The World; ()
OSTI ID:5578385
Inadequate data and unreliable information makes it difficult to determine how much energy the developing countries need, although they now account for 25% of non-communist oil demand. Four of the 11 million barrels per day supply the transportation sector, with road transportation the major user. Data on the income elasticity of both motor and aviation fuel demand indicate a rapid growth rate, although the starting point was at a very low level. A sectoral analysis shows trends toward car ownership in relation to income levels, population, urbanization, and domestic car production, as well as demographic tendencies. There is a similar upward trend in the ownership of commercial vehicles and demand for aviation services. On the basis of this analysis, the author projects fuel needs for each sector through the year 2000. 8 figures, 9 tables.
