Journal Article · · Annual Review of Energy; (USA)

  1. The World Bank, Washington, DC (US)
The author discusses how less developed countries (LDCs) have been adjusting to the changes in oil prices since 1973. The increase in real international oil prices is seen s having a negative impact on the balances of payments and growth prospects of LDCs. It has also led them to undertake heavy investments to develop domestic sources of energy. The effects of the decline in oil prices in 1986 on LDCs is addressed. An economic comparison between gas and oil is presented. According to the author, the energy sectors in most developing countries will need to expand to meet domestic demand.
