Solid and liquid wastes: management, methods, and socioeconomic considerations
- eds.
This is one of three books published by the Pennsylvania Academy of Science describing and analyzing the technology and disposal of waste products. This volume considers waste types, sources, and management, and covers such aspects as classification and properties, waste management in municipalities, hospitals and the pulp and paper industry, and the role of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources and local government in waste management. Treatment technology as to waste water, microbial destruction of industrial solid wastes, waste control techniques, and treatment systems is also discussed. Environmental and health impacts are evaluated as to organic compounds, trace elements, fluorides in the environment, oil pollution, health effects related to sewage effluent discharge, and ecological effects of acid rain deposition. Information is included on soil chemistry, the marine repository, bioconversion, solid waste recycling, and economic aspects of waste management, as well as laws, regulations and socioeconomic considerations. Separate abstracts were prepared for 21 papers in this book.
