Growing role of LNG in world energy supplies

Conference · · Gastech '79 LNG/LPG Conf. Pap.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5576794
Since entering the market in 1964, LNG has made tremendous gains in world trade, proving to be a safe, reliable, and cost-competitive gas resource despite public safety concerns. Presently, eight liquefaction plants in six different countries ship 3.5 billion cu ft/day to six gas-importing countries at prices competitive with imported fuel oil. Extraordinary growth in LNG trade by 1990 (to 4.5 trillion cu ft/yr) is projected to bridge the supply gap expected in Western Europe and the US. A major constraint on LNG's long-term contribution stems from the lack of economic incentive to most Middle East countries, whose reserves are the world's largest, to initiate export projects due to the price-competitiveness of LNG and fuel oil. Consuming countries may have to agree to receive LNG at prices considerably above imported fuel oil costs.
