Potential for LNG world trade

Journal Article · · Chem. Eng. Prog.; (United States)

From 1964 to 1979, international trade in LNG grew from 52 billion ft/sup 3/ to 1.55 trillion ft/sup 3/. Although LNG trade has not yet reached its originally projected goals, this 23.5% annual growth rate is remarkable because the determination of project promoters played such a vital role in achieving LNG's relatively modest trading level. LNG's share of international natural gas trade has also grown, from 2.2% in 1964 to 13.5% in 1977. By 1985, world trade in LNG could double with the implementation of projects now considered firm or under construction. Several other LNG projects are in various stages of planning; their probabilities of getting off the ground range from near-certain to negligible. As conventional energy supplies decline, the late 1980s and early 1990s could see a period of rapid LNG-project development.
