Lattice vibrations in the strong electron-phonon-interaction system BaPb/sub 1-x/Bi/sub x/O/sub 3/ studied by Raman scattering

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)

Lattice vibrations of the high-T/sub c/ superconductor BaPb/sub 1-x/Bi/sub x/O/sub 3/ are investigated by Raman scattering. The breathing mode of BiO/sub 6/ octahedra is assigned to the 569 cm/sup -1/ peak which has large scattering intensity in BaBiO/sub 3/. The temperature-dependent soft modes at 121 cm/sup -1/ in BaPb/sub 0.7/Bi/sub 0.3/O/sub 3/ and 48 cm/sup -1/ in BaBiO/sub 3/ are assigned to the rotational modes of Pb(Bi)O/sub 6/. A remarkable correlation is found between T/sub c/ and the scattering intensity of the 43- and 100-cm/sup -1/ peaks. The origin of these modes is discussed.
