In view of the presence of carbide phases in certain nickel based superalloys, they studied the effect of the monocarbides of the metals of the IVA and VA groups of the periodic table on HSC of nickel. In order to obtain comparable results, they selected six binary eutectic alloys of nickel with the carbides TiC, ZrC, HfC, VC, NbC, and TaC. The alloys have identical structures and contain approximately the same amount (10-15 vol. %) of the carbide phase that is uniformly distributed throughout the body.
