Effect of oxides of iron, chromium, titanium, and rare-earth elements on formation of solid solutions with cubic structure in the ZrO/sub 2/-Sc/sub 2/O/sub 3/ system

The authors investigate the interaction of oxide additives with solid solutions of the compositions ZrO/sub 2/ + Sc/sub 2/O/sub 3/. The x-ray diffraction patterns are presented for samples of compositions 0.90ZrO2 + 0.10Sc/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and 0.99 (0.90ZrO/sub 2/ + 0.10Sc/sub 2/O/sub 3/) + 0.01 TiO/sub 2/. Dissolving Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ an Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/ in solid solutions of the system ZrO/sub 2/-Sc/sub 2/O/sub 3/ with a cubic structure is due to the presence of oxygen ionic vacancies; the solubility of TiO/sub 2/ depends on the average radius of the cation of the solid solution.
