We have begun studies of the Ar/Xe laser, operating on the 5d{minus}6p Xe transitions, using electron-beam, e-beam sustained, and x-ray preionized discharges to investigate the kinetics and potential of the laser with these different pumping techniques. Preliminary results include a specific output energy of 0.75 {ital J}/1 using the e-beam alone, enhancements of up to 10 using the e-beam sustained discharge, and the first reported lasing from an x-ray preionized discharge, using a device with a 5 cm electrode gap. Line competition has also been observed.
