Present state and future development of coking coal supplies in the Ukraine
If the Ukrainian coke output is to increase to the levels envisaged for the end of the 10th Five-Year Plan and beyond, it will be necessary to improve coke production techniques, develop new processes and pursue more extensive researches into the properties of the coals won from the existing pits and those planned for future development. Systematic investigations by the geological prospecting organizations have enabled UKhIN to recommend the development of pits in new areas to expand the supplies of grade Zh, K, and OS coals; if these recommendations are implemented, the supplies will increase by 8.0 million tons/year. On the other hand, all the new pits will have to work seams at extreme depths (1000 m or more). Blast-furnace operation is being intensified and the new blast furnaces are very large. Consequently, the coke must meet high property specifications and the Ukrainian coking plants must improve their blend constitutions. The construction of plants to produce coke by continuous methods from poorly caking and mainly low-rank coals will help to ensure that the blast furnaces can be supplied with coke in the necessary amounts and at the required quality level.
