A model is proposed for a unified description of the weak and electromagnetic interactions in the framework of the symmetry group SU(2) x U(1) when the lepton multiplets of the group are not symmetric under interchange of the electron and muon. For the electromagnetic interaction and the weak interaction due to charged currents the model predicts ..mu..e-universality, while for the weak interaction with neutral currents ..mu..e-universality does not obtain. The neutral weak current of the muon is a vector current, while the neutral weak current of the electron contains both a vector and an axial-vector part. The ..mu..e-universality is violated by introducing a hypothetical neutral heavy lepton whose weak interactions with the electron and muon are not the same. P-odd effects in the scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons and muons by nucleons and deuterons are studied, and it is shown that their magnitude is sensitive to the choice of variant of the model. The decays and mechanisms of production of the introduced neutral lepton are investigated.
