The first nickel-hydrogen (Ni-H/sub 2/) battery for use on a long-life commercial communications spacecraft has been developed by Ford Aerospace under contract with INTELSAT. This new battery system is planned for incorporation in the later INTELSAT V satellites, with launches starting in the third quarter of 1982. Use of the nickel-hydrogen batteries is expected to enhance spacecraft reliability and lifetime and also represents a 6 kg mass savings. This paper summarizes the design and development results and discusses qualification and acceptance test data at both the battery and spacecraft levels.
