Qualification and life test results for the multiple satellite 12 Ah nickel cadmium battery

The versatile nickel cadmium battery design developed by Ford Aerospace and Communications for use on long life synchronous and elliptical orbiting satellites has been qualification, life, and acceptance tested in three configurations. The battery design, which is easily modified to incorporate any number of series cells, specific thermal control requirements, and telemetry capabilities, is currently in production for use on three satellite programs: INSAT-I, CS-2, and the Swedish Viking satellite. The qualification, acceptance, and life test characteristics are reviewed for this battery design.
