The bonding in the adducts BH/sub 3/.NH/sub 3/, BH/sub 3/.N(CH/sub 3/)/sub 3/, BH/sub 3/.CO, BH/sub 3/.CNCH/sub 3/, BH/sub 3/.PF/sub 3/, and BH/sub 3/.P(CH/sub 3/)/sub 3/ are studied by using a combination of valence ionization potentials and core binding energies. The data indicate that ..pi.. back-bonding is significant only in BH/sub 3/.CO and BH/sub 3/.PF/sub 3/. The stabilization of the Lewis base lone pair upon coordination to BH/sub 3/ is correlated with the proton affinity of the Lewis base. It is proposed that the strengthening of the C-O bond in CO and the C-N bond in CH/sub 3/NC upon coordination to BH/sub 3/ is a consequence of rehybridization of the carbon sigma orbitals. 28 references, 4 figures, 3 tables.
