This volume includes papers on chemical vapor coatings for oxidation protection of titanium alloys, predicting the oxidative lifetime of beta NiAl-Zr alloys, properties of SiC-fiber-reinforced carbon composites, effects of aeroconvective environments in 2D reinforced ceramic matrix composites, Space Shuttle Orbiter carbon-carbon oxidation performance, and oxidation protection of C/C composites by graded-codeposited CVD coatings. Particular attention is given to elevated-temperature toughening mechanisms in the SiCw/Al2O3 composite system, strengthening and toughening mechanisms in SiC/C CVD composites, modeling of carbon oxidation inhibition by nanoscopic imaging, processing of SiC-fiber-reinforced Si3N4 composites using preceramic polymers, fundamentals of protective coating strategies for carbon-carbon composites, and repair of oxidation protection coatings on carbon-carbon using preceramic polymers. Also discussed are interfacial properties of SiC/SiC composites made of plasma carbon coated fibers, and efficient numerical models to emulate inherent defects in brittle composites.
