Distortion of particle trajectories by strong-focusing fields in a linear accelerator

A basic equation is derived for the perturbed motion of particles in a linear accelerator; the model uses an analogy with cyclic accelerators. The solution of this equation yields analytic expressions for the increase in the beam dimension caused by various modes of distortion caused by the focusing field: a structural nonlinearity, gradient errors, a random nonlinearity, and curvature of the channel axis. The effect of a structural nonlinearity is studied. Resonant effects are discussed and equations are derived for the maximum increase in the beam dimension in the channel of a linear accelerator in the resonance and nonresonance cases.
