A search for 35 two- and three-body nucleon decay modes was performed in an 8000 metric ton water Cherenkov detector (3300 metric ton fiducial volume, or 2.0 x 10/sup 33/ nucleons). The author observes 376 events originating inside the fiducial volume during 443 live days exposure in the visible energy range of 150 to 3000 MeV. The rate and characteristics of these events are compatible with the background expected from atmospheric nu interactions. Lower limits of the particle lifetimes at the 90% confidence level for 35 nucleon decay modes are obtained in the range of 10/sup 30/ approx. 10/sup 32/ years without subtracting background. Twenty four events originating inside the fiducial volume are consistent with either atmospheric nu interactions or nucleon decay models without neutrinos in their final state.
