A search for events consistent with the nucleon decays p..-->..nuK/sup +/, p..-->..nuK/sup *+/ and n..-->..nuK/sup *0/ was undertaken in a 8000 metric ton water Cherenkov detector with a 3300 metric ton fiducial volume (2.0 x 10/sup 33/ nucleons). In 202 days of lifetime, 148 events originating in the fiducial volume and with relativistic ionization loss in the range 150 to 2000 MeV were found. The rate and characteristics of these events are consistent with expectations from neutrino interactions. Events consistent with the above nucleon decay modes are also consistent with the expected neutrino interactions. Without performing a background subtraction, lower limits on the partial lifetimes at the 90% confidence level are obtained.
