As part of a search for direct photon production at large transverse momentum (p/sub t/) in hadronic collisions, studies of ..pi../sup 0/ and eta/sup 0/ production for 2.0 less than or equal to p/sub t/ less than or equal to 5.5 GeV/c and 0.00 less than or equal to x/sub F/ less than or equal to 0.35 are presented. The detector employed was a large lead, liquid argon sampling calorimeter, which afforded reconstruction of mesons decaying into two photons in events containing many photons in the final state. Inclusive production cross sections for ..pi../sup 0/ and eta/sup 0/ are calculated and presented. The kinematical behavior of the inclusive ..pi../sup 0/ cross section is examined in detail. The ratio eta/sup 0//..pi../sup 0/ for 2.5 less than or equal to p/sub t/ less than or equal to 5.0 GeV/c and 0.00 less than or equal to x/sub F/ less than or equal to 0.35 is found to have an average value of 0.47 +/- 0.03, with a slight increase in value with increasing p/sub t/.
