We conducted an experiment at the Tagged Photon Laboratory at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory to measure elastic photon-proton scattering, quasi-elastic vector and pseudoscalar meson photoproduction, and inclusive single photon and pseudoscalar meson photoproduction. This thesis describes the detection system of the experiment and data-taking and analysis procedures used for the extraction of Feynman X (X/sub F/) and transverse momentum (p/sub t/) distributions for inclusive photoproduction of ..pi../sup 0/ and eta mesons. Using tagged photons ranging from 50 to 130 GeV incident on a 75 cm long liquid hydrogen target, we measure inclusive ..pi../sup 0/ production for .35 < X/sub F/ < 1.0 with .3 < p/sub t/ < 1.4 GeV/c and inclusive eta production for .35 < X/sub F/ < 1.0 with 0 < p/sub t/ < 1.4 Gev/c. Clear ..pi../sup 0/ and eta signals are observed. The distributions in both X/sub F/ and p/sub T/ are inconsistent with scaling. The average transverse momentum of ..pi../sup 0/ is .57 +- .07 GeV/c, while for ets's it is .52 + .04 GeV/c. The average eta/..pi../sup 0/ ratio is .52 +- .10 over the range .3 < p/sub t/ < 1.4 GeV/c and .35 < X/sub F/ < 1.0.
