Neutron yields from spontanous fission of /sup 252/Cf

The purpose of this study was to detect fragments emitting an enhanced number of neutrons in the spontaneous fission of /sup 252/Cf. The neutron yield from the fragments was determined as a function of the total kinetic energy of the fragment pair and the mass of one of the fragments. The fragments were detected with a double gridded ionization chamber. The moment of fission was fixed by a photomultiplier on the basis of sparks in the gas of the chamber due to the fragments. A plastic scintillator and photomultiplier located 40 cm from the center of the chamber served as the neutron detector. Regions of enhanced neutron yield were found with the following central points: M=116--118 a.m.u., E/sub K/=170 MeV; M=156 a.m.u., E/sub K/=140MeV; M=126--128 a.m.u., E/sub K/=135 MeV.
