The radical cation of C{sub 60} is prepared by electron transfer to singlet N-methylacridinium hexafluorophosphate. It has {lambda}{sub max} near 980 nm. The radical cation can also be prepared in higher yield by cosensitization, using high concentrations of biphenyl to form biphenyl radical cation which is the ultimate oxidant for C{sub 60}. 27 refs., 2 figs.
