Intelligent computer-assisted instruction: artificial intelligence in instruction and training

Book ·
OSTI ID:5548850
This study investigated the use of artificial-intelligence techniques in computed-assisted instruction in an attempt to determine its value and proper role in the educational process. An in-depth, state-of-the-art assessment of intelligent computer-assisted instruction and a description of its development has been endeavored. The purpose of the investigation was to attempt to structure the widely dispersed body of literature and provide an insightful analysis of the field as a whole. Its goals were to: (1) critically analyze the literature on intelligent computer-assisted instruction from an educational perspective, and (2) provide a comprehensive review and description of the field. With respect to intelligent CAI, there has also been the problem of lack of knowledge and cooperation between engineers and computer scientists (who have developed most of the ICAI systems) and the educational community. One one hand, educators involved in CAI have generally not made good use of computer technology; on the other hand, engineers developing ICAI have tended to ignore established research principles from instruction and learning. Both of these problems are addressed as well, with suggestions provided for improved communication.
