Title: Artificial intelligence: Principles and applications

Abstract

Following the Japanese announcement that they intend to devise, make, and market, in the 1990s, computers incorporating a level of intelligence, a vast amount of energy and expense has been diverted at the field of Artificial Intelligence. Workers for the past 25 years in this discipline have tried to reproduce human behavior on computers and this book presents their achievements and the problems. Subjects include: computer vision, speech processing, robotics, natural language processing expert systems and machine learning. The book also attempts to show the general principles behind the various applications and finally attempts to show their implications for other human endeavors such as philosophy, psychology, and the development of modern society.

  • This is a guide on applying the emerging technology of artificial intelligence and expert systems to the corporate environment. The authors focus on specific, practical applications and provide ways to set them in motion, including advice on determining realistic applications, evaluating costs, getting authorization for a purchase, and implementing AI and expert systems.
  • The conference covered general sessions on AI techniques suitable for engineering applications, e.g. knowledge representation, natural language, probability, design methodologies and constraints. This was followed by sessions covering application in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and general engineering. Further sessions covered robotics and tools and techniques for building knowledge based systems.
  • Papers are presented on expert systems for such functions as model management, the labeling segment in FLIR imagery, and on-board fault monitoring and diagnosis; procedures for analyzing and interpreting images; and knowledge-based systems for planning, ship identification, fault-identification systems, design issues, interpretation of signal images, and electronic circuit-diagram interpretation. Topics discussed include image procesing, heuristic systems, and knowledge presentation. Consideration is given to pattern recognition, robotics, and a number of artificial intelligence applications.
  • An expert system for roving robotics; hybrid expert systems in image analysis; the use of PROLOG in automatic speech recognition; a knowledge-based geological prospecting system; the use of AI technology in failsafe real-time systems; computer vision for artificially intelligent robotic systems; and a knowledge representation system for searching trajectories in robotics are examined. Attention is given to using contextual data in classification algorithms; real-time intelligent hardware-based image processing; a parallel intelligent system; a LISP machine; a graphical display intelligence software based on a raster scan; and the extraction of uniform regions with minimization of noise points effects.
