Spontaneous and rapid insertion of CO into certain organoactinide hydrides is reported. The sterically unencumbered bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) 5f hydrides such as (Th((CH/sub 3/)/sub 5/C/sub 5/)/sub 2/(..mu..-H)H)/sub 2/ react rapidly with excess CO at -78/sup 0/C. The carbonylation of alkoxy hydroxides is also described. Thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the reactions are reported. (BLM)
