OSTI ID:5313736

The synthesis, chemistry, and properties of a new class of highly reactive and coordinatively unsaturated actinide organometallics, bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)organoactinide, (eta/sup 5/-C/sub 5/(CH/sub 3/)/sub 5/ /sub 2/ML/sub 2/ where the M = Th, U and L = a variety of ligands, are described. The material is divided into 4 chapters. The first chapter deals with the synthesis and properties of the complex (eta/sup 5/-C/sub 5/(CH/sub 3/)/sub 5/ /sub 2/MX/sub 2/ where M = Th, U and X = Cl. The organometallic chemistry of the lower valent U(III) species, eta/sup 5/-C/sub 5/(CH/sub 3/)/sub 5/ /sub 2/U(..mu..-Cl)/sub 3/ and preparaion of other U(III) organometallics comprises chapter 2. Reactions of CO with a variety of bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)Th and U alkyls and hydrides to produce migratory insertion products are discussed in chapter 3. The material in the fourth chapter discusses the insertion of CO into Th- and U-metal-nitrogen bonds in the complexes (eta/sup 5/-C/sub 5/(CH/sub 3/)/sub 5/ /sub 2/M(NR/sub 2/)/sub 2/ and (eta/sup 5/-C/sub 5/(CH/sub 3/)/sub 5/ /sub 2/M(NR/sub 2/) X where M = Th, U; X = Cl; and R = CH/sub 3/, C/sub 2/H/sub 5/ to yield dihapto-carbamoyl complexes. All the new complexes were characterized by ir and NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and in several cases by cryoscopic molecular weight measurements. (BLM)
